Winter 2024 - Empathy
-
Kindergarten
Learning Objectives:
Students in the PreK and Kindergarten Academy took part in a lesson on empathy for the second No Place for Hate lesson of the year. Students listened to a read-aloud of The Rabbit Listened by Cori Doerrfield.
In this story different animals try to help Taylor, the main character, who has lots of strong feelings after a block tower he built accidentally comes crashing down.
-
Students were then given the chance to move around the cafeteria and sit at various tables with the animals they feel THEY would most likely have the same reaction as in different situations. For example, when faced with adversity the chicken likes to talk to others about his feelings. The ostrich likes to be alone and doesn’t want people to talk to him. The bear feels angry. And the snake wants to hurt others with his words.
This activity allowed students to think about how they would respond to different situations and also look around and recognize that not everyone responds the same way. We can show empathy by being aware of other people’s feelings and imagining how they may feel, even if it is different from our own feelings.
